TCO Stormy Trails Committee Presents: "Elevator Shaft and Beyond!" (8 miles)
Details
Greetings -
If you have never done the historic Elevator Shaft Trail and want a guided tour, this is your chance!
This hike is free and available to TCO members and non-members.
We plan to leave 8:30am sharp from the Multnomah Gift Shop entrance at Multnomah Falls and head up Elevator Shaft - a steep rock field (0.5 miles distance at 1200 ft ascent). We shall take a safest route up the rock field.
BEWARE: The rock field is steep and can be loose. Proper hiking shoes (no sneakers!) are required. There are patches of poison oak along the way. I will point PO out so that it may be avoided. PLEASE wear long pants as a precaution and bring gloves for scrambling.
What is "...And Beyond?":
I wish to visit one or more of the following points of interest along the way and gauge effort towards restoration:
- Meadow Ridge (offtrail mossy ridge)
- Ancient Cougar Den inside Cougar Rock ("Here kitty kitty!")
- 1931 Buick site (does it still drive?)
Meetup: In front of Multnomah Lodge Gift Shop
When: 830am sharp is when we shall start hiking up
Pass: No pass needed if parking in the I84 highway parking lot
Distance: 8-ish miles
Ascent: 1800-ish ft ascent
Pet Policy: Please ask me before bringing your pet. This is a difficult hike with exposure. You will not be able to control your pet on the rock field. I will bring Rocket (my dog). He has done this before.
We will stop at Nesika Lodge around mid-day to eat our lunch. There is fresh water at the lodge. Please bring your own lunch and enjoy a tour of Nesika Lodge.
This hike also qualifies as a TCO membership hike.
Estimated return time is a rough estimate only.
Please feel free to use the Meetup chat for this trip to organize carpooling.
Trails Club of Oregon trip leaders are all volunteers and are not paid professionals or guides. Please remember you are responsible for your own health and safety during and on the way to and from this event. Please be informed and self-sufficient.
