What we’re about
Inspired by the interdenominational and multidisciplinary Trans Sangha in San Francisco, we're hoping to build something similar here in NYC—a regular, quiet space for meditation and connection, created by and for trans and non-binary folks who are drawn to contemplative practice.
This group is for anyone under the trans umbrella who’s interested in starting or deepening a meditation practice—whether you're coming from a Buddhist tradition, another spiritual path, or no tradition at all. You don’t need to be a formal student of any lineage, and you don’t need to be “good” at meditating. You just have to be curious and open.
Our offerings will focus on two types of meetings:
- Silent meditation sessions (styles may vary depending on the facilitator—like Zen "zazen"/"shikantaza," or Insight/Vipassana),
- Short guided meditations, followed by an opportunity to engage in community discussions to share thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
We're hoping to grow this into a truly interfaith, interpractice community—something that reflects the breadth of NYC’s contemplative scene while offering a soft place to land for trans folks looking for spiritual grounding.
We'll organize mainly through Discord, so if this idea speaks to you, come join—even if you just want to hang out and see where things go. We’d love to eventually build a rhythm of in-person gatherings too, for those who want to help shape that.
One of our early facilitators is a lay Rinzai Zen practitioner connected to a temple and teacher (though not a teacher themselves). We're actively looking for more facilitators from diverse practices and backgrounds. If you have something to offer—or just want to sit quietly with others—you're welcome.
