Conga! Conga! Conga!
I have room in my ongoing CONGA class for a few more students. We meet in Sebastopol at various locations and online. Here is a class description Contact me for more information and location.
The class has some native Spanish speakers and people who have traveled extensively. We have allot of fun and I give history of everything I teach.
I’ve played and taught conga drumming since the mid 1970’s. I went to Cuba in 1985, Brazil in 1989 and have recorded percussion on over 35 albums, many of which can be heard here. I’ve played in Cuban and Brazilian folklore and Jazz bands throughout the bay area including MiraSol, Viva Brazil, Brazilian Beat, RumbaAfroSon, Escola Nova de Samba and many others.
I’ve been called a master drummer, but I believe that term should be reserved for my teachers: CK and Kwaku Ladzekpo, Titos Sompa, Malonga Casquelourde, Karamaba Diabate, Regino Jimenez, Mamady Keita, Jorge Alabe, and many others.
Brilliant as these teacher are, I had to teach and translate for myself the magic they showed me. I apply my musicology skill to making the music accessible. In my classes I break complex rhythm patterns into smaller chunks and then weave them back together to create flow and room for expression. I always keep the underlying beat clean and clear.
As a young person I had extreme difficulty with music and perception. Slow and dedicated practice, reflection and the community of drummers helped me over came those challenges to the point where I have become a master teacher.
I’ve taught all levels from from 4 years old to college and professional. I taught World Percussion in High School for 12 years. I’ve worked with the deaf, the blind, kids at risk, rhythm geniuses and people with all kinds of challenges.
