Sept 10, Day 6: Ancient Echoes and Flaming Cliffs – From Petroglyphs to Dinosaurs
After a leisurely breakfast, your journey through the Gobi continues with a scenic drive toward the legendary Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag. Along the way, you’ll stop at Khavtsgait, an ancient and sacred hillside site scattered with hundreds of remarkable petroglyphs. Etched into the stone by hunters as far back as 3000 BC, these engravings tell stories of survival, wildlife, and spiritual belief—and from the hilltop, you’ll also enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding desert. As you travel onward, watch the horizon for glimpses of wild gazelles sprinting across the steppe, their speed outpacing even the vehicles.
Arriving at Bayanzag, you’ll step into a place of global significance. It was here that famed explorer Roy Chapman Andrews unearthed the world’s first dinosaur eggs in the 1920s. This region, with its fiery red cliffs and sparse Saksaul forest, remains one of the richest paleontological sites on Earth. After a relaxed lunch at your camp, spend the afternoon wandering through this extraordinary landscape—where ancient fossils still emerge from the earth and the red sandstone formations glow in the setting sun. It’s a humbling walk through deep time, where the past feels vividly alive.

Sept 11, Day 7: Journey to Ongi – Echoes of a Lost Monastery
Today’s journey takes you northward through changing desert landscapes toward one of Mongolia’s most evocative spiritual sites—the Ongi Temple ruins. Arriving in the afternoon, you’ll settle into your ger camp before setting out on foot to explore the remains of this once-grand monastery complex. Founded in 1760 to honor the Dalai Lama’s first visit to Mongolia, Ongi was once home to hundreds of monks before it was destroyed during political purges in the 1930s.
As you walk among the scattered ruins and partially restored temples, the silence of the site speaks volumes. You’ll see the memorial stupa inscribed with the names of those lost during the purges, and if you’re fortunate, you may meet local monks working to preserve the spiritual legacy of this sacred place. This quiet, windswept valley offers a powerful glimpse into Mongolia’s turbulent history and enduring faith.

Sept 12, Day 8: Kharakhorum – Legacy of the Great Khans and Sacred Monasteries
Today begins with an early off-road journey to one of Mongolia’s most historically significant destinations—Kharakhorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire. Founded by Chinggis Khan in 1220 and later transformed by his son Ogodei into a walled city with a grand palace, Kharakhorum once stood at the crossroads of empires and trade routes.
Your visit begins at the local museum, where artifacts and exhibits bring to life the legacy of the Mongol Empire and the rise of this once-thriving cultural and political center. Next, step into the serene courtyards of Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest and most important Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. Built in the 16th century using stones from the ruins of the ancient city, Erdene Zuu remains an active place of worship. Join a guided tour of its temples and, if timing allows, experience the haunting beauty of morning chanting by resident monks.
After lunch at the ger camp, your cultural exploration continues with a visit to a local cooperative, where you can take part in a felt-making workshop or explore a regional art gallery. End the day with a visit to the Monument of the Three Kings overlooking the sweeping Orkhon River Valley, followed by a stop at the legendary Fertility Stone—an intriguing remnant of Mongolia’s ancient spiritual traditions.

Sept 13, Day 9: Tracking Wild Horses – Return to Ulaanbaatar

Upon arrival, you’ll visit the park’s information center to learn about the diverse wildlife that calls this protected area home—including red deer, marmots, foxes, and the iconic Takhi, or Przewalski’s horse—the world’s only truly wild horse, once extinct in the wild and now thriving here.
After lunch at your ger camp, located at the edge of the park, you’ll venture into the rolling hills and grassy valleys of Hustai in search of these elusive, powerful horses. With real-time updates from park rangers, your guide will lead you to the best viewing spots for an up-close encounter. For those seeking a deeper wilderness experience, there’s the option to hike further into the park’s untouched terrain to spot other wildlife and soak in the sweeping steppe views.
