Joshua Tree Comet
Details
Join me in Joshua Tree to photograph the Comet C/2025 R3 (Pan-STARRS).
I’ll be driving out early afternoon on Friday to allow time for scouting before dark. I’m staying at motel 6 in twenty nine palms which is not the closest to shooting locations but other hotels don’t allow dogs or are too expensive. You’re welcome to stay wherever you’d like. Camping is also an option. I’m open to sharing a room with somebody.
Ignore event location. Location will be provided the night before. I’ve never attempted to photograph a comet. According to online research it’s best viewed 90 minutes before sunrise, which is at 6:10am. The plan is to get up around 3am to be at the location by 4am. Do I really want to do this? The 18th is a new moon so no need to worry about that. I think we’ll need a longer lens 50mm+ to get a foreground with the comet. If you want just the comet, go longer. Can’t hurt to bring a wide angle too just incase. Camera settings should be similar concept to shooting the Milky Way.
Event may be cancelled last minute if weather is not permitting, the comet is no longer visible, or any other reason.
