Sandhills Horticultural Gardens

We'll meet at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, 4800 W. Friendly Ave, Greensboro at 9am to commute to Pinehurst.

This was popular 3 years ago, so let's again take a road trip to Pinehurst, NC to take in the beautiful Sandhills Horticultural Gardens, 555 Lindbergh Pl, Pinehurst, NC 28374. This is 32 acres of gardens and natural areas right next to Sandhills Community College at 3395 Airport Rd, Pinehurst. This garden started in 1978 with the Ebersole Holly Garden and has now grown to 12 gardens and, also, has woodlands and wetlands trails. The gardens are the Hackley Woodland Garden, Fruit & Vegetable Garden, Desmond Native Wetland Trail Garden, Ebersole Holly Garden, Atkins Hillside Garden, Succulent Garden, Conifer Garden, Annual Garden, Sir Walter Raleigh Garden, Children's Garden, Margaret Ambrose Japanese Garden, and Rose Garden. This is about 1 1/2 hours from Greensboro. I recommend we take some light snacks and use the picnic area next to the Visitors Center. We will walk around the gardens, break for a snack, then take in some more of the gardens. I'm not quite certain how long it will take to enjoy the gardens but, we won't rush. Be sure to bring some comfortable walking shoes, maybe a hat, sunscreen, and your phone/camera. This is truly a wonderful place to take in God's creation and is only 30 minutes from where I grew up. Afterwards, we'll head about 5 miles down the road to Highlanders Farm, 5784 NC-22, Carthage, NC 28327 .... a 6th generation farm in Moore County offering strawberries, tomatoes, peaches, blueberries, blackberries, seasonal vegetables. And, peaches are still in season all through July. If time allows, we’ll have a late afternoon meal at the Pik N Pig in Carthage (a 4th generation bbq place that cooks their q all night over hickory) on the way home. It’s right next to Gilliam-McConnell Airfield and we can eat outside and watch as folks fly in for some of the best q around. They close at 4pm. I’m estimating we'll be back in Greensboro by 5 or 6pm .... maybe sooner.
