For our August reading, we'll be reading Richard Reeves' Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male is Struggling and What to Do About It.

Richard Reeves is a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institute where he is also the Director of the "Future of the Middle Class Initiative". Published less than a year ago, Reeves' book makes the argument that the modern male is indeed struggling, but that our current political framing, when it admits this, often frames male issues as being problems "with men". Reeves warns of a growing gender gap in education and other opportunities, flaws in accounting for different dispositions and needs between male and female individuals, and "irresponsible" and reactionary forces stepping in to exploit the malaise felt among men.

Reeves' book is one of the few direct, sober analyses of the problems facing the modern male and should be a great starting point for discussing what it means to be a male today as a legitimate topic of discussion.
