🎤 Talk 1: The Power of Expression Through AI
by Jonathan Farrell
Talk Summary - Artificial intelligence has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing human creativity and self-expression across the technical landscape, equipping developers and innovators with powerful new tools to enhance productivity, collaboration, and innovation. “The Power of Expression Through AI” explores the dynamic synergy between human developers and intelligent systems. Central to this discussion are two key concepts: “Experts Should Be Experts,” underscoring the importance of human expertise guiding AI applications while pushing the envelope in their field, and “The Democratization of Self-Expression,” illustrating how AI opens opportunities for broader participation in innovation and creativity. This session will address both the opportunities and the thoughtful integration necessary to harness AI effectively, emphasizing its role as a collaborator in enhancing human-driven development rather than replacing it.

🎤 Talk 2: How OSS gets me better work
by Sebastian Imlay
Talk Summary - The world runs on Open Source Software yet it seems rare to meet a software engineer who is a regular contributor to open source projects. I got into Rust in 2018 and found that there were missing features in libraries and found it very approachable. Since then I’ve submitted 570+ PRs and authored 283 issues to ~150 different repositories. I maintain/co-own a few Rust projects with +1m downloads.
In this talk, I’ll share:
- How I got into OSS
- How I became a (low effort) maintainer
- How OSS has lead to new/better work (for me)
- How I avoid burnout
- Red flags on projects that I avoid
Speaker Bio - Sebastian Imlay - Senior Software Engineer, Rustacean and OSS Enthusiast
