Kubernetes Federations and Kolla-Kubernetes #20

Details
Hi, Kubernetes lovers:
According to my notes, a few members expressed the desire to learn more about Federations in the previous gatherings. I reached out to our old friend from Google, Ray Tsang, and he would love to swing by our Meetup again on August 24 to discuss Federations with local professionals. Below you can find the summary of this talk:
Title: From Laptop to the World - Global deployment at your fingertip w/ Kubernetes
Abstract: Kubernetes is a powerful, open source, container orchestration / cluster management tool created by Google. It drew upon all the lessons learned from a near-decade of using containers at Google. Kubernetes handles deployment and provisioning of your application architecture, and it also handles number of failure scenarios gracefully, from a crashed process, to a failure of a cluster node. In this talk, we will develop a Java application locally, run and test it locally and deploying it into a cluster of machines with Kubernetes and container orchestration. But we'll take this even a step further, and see how we can configure and utilize Kubernetes Cluster Federation to deploy this application into multiple datacenter regions around the globe, configuring global load balancing, and regional level service discovery that can handle a variety of failure scenarios.
In addition, Rich Wellum from Lenovo will talk about his contribution on Kubernetes in OpenStack community. Here is Rich's short bio and the abstract of his talk:
Rich Wellum
Advisory Researcher, SW
Cloud InfrastructureLenovo Data Center Group
Abstract: Part of my role at Lenovo is to learn about and contribute to OpenStack technologies. In particular I have been focusing on the pivot to using containers in the industry and what that means to Lenovo and how it can be both applied to our own products and how I can be part of this movement and contribute. This talk will be an update about an exciting technology in this arena – Kolla and in particular Kolla-Kubernetes. The Kolla project is a member of the OpenStack Big Tent and Kolla's mission statement is: To provide production-ready containers and deployment tools for operating OpenStack clouds. The Kolla-Kubernetes deliverable maintains a cloud-native implementation of deployment of OpenStack on Kubernetes – it is cutting edge and still pre 1.0 release. As part of this talk I will share the latest news, how to contribute and communicate with the community and also show a demo of a tool we have written to orchestrate Kolla-Kubernetes.
