Deploying Stand-alone Ceph and Integrating with K8/OpenShift and OpenStack

Details

Ceph storage can be deployed using OpenStack's TripleO Director or using the OpenShift Data Foundations Operator for Kubernetes/OpenShift; both make it extremely easy and seamless to deploy for the specific solutions. But, when you want to use the same Ceph Cluster as the backing storage solution for both, integration becomes very complex unless you deploy Ceph as a stand-alone cluster.

This presentation dives into the deployment of a stand alone Ceph Storage cluster, highlighting its benefits and considerations for a successful installation. We'll cover the components of the Ceph cluster, explaining their functions and dependencies, network considerations, data protection schemes, pool creation, and security.

OpenStack Director-deployed Ceph using TripleO has been tightly integrated but in future releases, day 2 operations and upgrades to Ceph are managed independently. This increases the lifecycle flexibility and reduces the maintenance windows. With the standalone Ceph cluster, you can easily integrate the storage services to the OpenStack Overcloud using the external-ceph.yaml environment file and the 'openstack overcloud deploy' command.

For Kubernetes/OpenShift, once the Data Foundations Operator is installed, it is just as easy to deploy the ODF Storage Cluster using the external Ceph Cluster. This does require a provided python script for extracting the Ceph cluster configuration so that it can be imported to the ODF Storage Cluster. Deployment and integration is seamless and additional benefits of using an external cluster can be realized.

Whether considering Ceph for small or large scale environments, this presentation aims to equip the audience with the knowledge to successfully plan and deploy a Ceph Storage Cluster for multiple use cases to meet their customer or organization's evolving data storage needs.
