Leveraging open source dynamic routing to implement a spine/leaf in datacenter

Details

Layer 2 networking is a thing of the past. Modern data centers are built using layer 3 networking protocols, where high availability and link fault tolerance and link aggregation are implemented using dynamic routing protocols.

In this presentation we will look at the innovations introduced in OpenStack Wallaby allowing it to scale beyond layer 2 networks. We will discuss the shortcomings of layer 2 networks and how layer-3 network protocols help address those. We will take a in depth look at OpenStack and its integration with FRRouting (FRR) to implement dynamic routing using BGP routing protocol. We will also explore the use of BFD (Bidirectional Forwarding Detection) protocol for detecting network link failures. Finally we will explore how ECMP is used to provide both high availability and load balancing in OpenStack control and dataplane networks.

Session Takeaways:

Learn about how open source routing daemons can aid in implementing dynamic routing network protocols to build modern scalable OpenStack environments.
