Gene Editing Discussion

ABOUT OUR DISCUSSION GROUP:
After a 3-year hiatus, we're back!
Once again, I'm starting up our monthly discussion group. We'll be offering a variety of topics. Discussions can be historical, philosophical, a topic in the news, etc. Some of the topics may be very heated, so we ask that we all treat each other with respect. We will keep the group fairly small so that we can hear everyone's views.

Instead of meeting at the cafe like we did 3 years ago, we will meet in my living room, which comfortably seats 8 people. Therefore, the first 8 people are in.
***If you were a NO SHOW more than twice during our past discussion groups (and I kept track), I'm sorry, but you will not be included in my home, since we are only having 8 people. I know I may make people angry at me over this, but I am going to be firm.

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC:
Gene editing

DISCUSSION:

1. Should we alter DNA only to prevent diseases?
   Or should we allow cosmetic altering?
2. Should the wealthy have an advantage?
   ~~(They have had advantages since the beginning of time).
3. Should the changes we make get passed down to the next offspring?
4. If a couple divorces, who gets the embryo?
5. Should we regulate quantity of frozen embryos
   ~~and set a time limit on how long they can be stored?

RESPECT
We ask that no one interrupts another while they are speaking. Also, to keep any individual from dominating the group, speaking time for each person will be limited to about a minute.

WHERE WE MEET:
We will meet in my home. Address will be given privately to those who respond yes. To those with dog allergies: I have a small short-haired 18-pound dog.

NO SHOWS
While I recognize things happen, repeated NO SHOWS will not be tolerated, especially since I’m only inviting the first 8 people who confirm that they will be attending (maybes don’t count). I dealt with NO SHOWS in the past, and it was very hard to plan. I will adopt the NO SHOW policy that many Meetup organizers employ:
• 1st Offense: Forgiveness, with a gentle warning.
• 2nd Offense: Forgiveness with a firm warning.
• 3rd Offense: 3 strikes, you're out.
