Total Solar Eclipse 2024!!!

Details

Update 08/07/2023: I will be unable to host this event due to some recent and unexpected financial bills.

However, if you went to the one in 2017, photographing this one won't look any different, but for those who have never seen a full eclipse, do try to make it.

It looks like Chris and I got the same shot of the total solar eclipse back in 2017. I was on Lake Marion in South Carolina where the path of totality ran right through the middle of the lake—I was on a dock, and the path was about 20 yards behind me. I can't believe we get another opportunity to experience this again; twice in a lifetime! I am cross-posting Chris' Photography Adventure's meetup so we can get a good turnout.

Not sure what I will be doing in 2024, but it is not that far away. How time flies. I have set the location to Texarkana Texas since the line of Totality seems to go through this location. We have almost three years so expect the exact location to be determined later.

You will need a telephoto lens and ISO 12312-2 solar filter glasses and filter. Never look into the sun directly without proper solar filter glasses, and do not point your camera directly at the sun without the proper filter. You can pay a lot of money for a solar filter, or you can make your own for $10 bucks:

Also, I used a relatively cheap telephoto lens in 2017. Something like this:

Just get out and practice on the actual sun before the event. You don't want to be screwing around with settings when the big moment arrives.

Here is Chris' post:

Let's get out and photograph the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024!! Yes, this is advance planning :)

The last total solar eclipse for North America was in 2017, and the one previous to that was 38 years before then. So, this is somewhat rare, and it will happen right here in our backyard.

I photographed the 2017 event and must say, it was truly an amazing experience. The image on this event is one I made in 2017. This is a bucket list item and everyone must experience it at least once in a lifetime.

We will finalize the exact location later, but it we will be somewhere in Texas, and in a place where we will be in the path of the total solar eclipse, giving us 4 minutes and 28 seconds of totality.

When photographing the eclipse, things happen fast, and it takes solid photo technique to get it right. So, I will run a series of training workshops, to make sure everyone has the right equipment, knows the process steps intimately, and will execute the actual image capture in a well-managed way. We will all be out together in the field making our images, and I will be on hand for support.

Finally, I want as many people as possible to truly experience this event. So, there is no cost for this event, at all, i.e. no cost for organizing the event, the planning, training workshops and the in-field support, and post-processing/editing (you will need to pay for your own travel, accommodation, equipment, food, etc.). We will just be a huge group of friends, family, and photographers, making awesome images.

See you there!

Who knows where we will be with COVID in 2024 and Texas is its own country with a rebel governor. Regardless, this will be a COVID safe meetup where facemasks, social distancing and hand sanitizer will be encouraged.

When you RSVP, you will be asked to agree to our terms and conditions posted on our about page: https://www.meetup.com/Triangle-Photography-Club.

Even though this will be an outdoor event, we may be in close contact. Please be respectful to folks who may or may not agree with the following:

  • Wear facemasks outdoors is optional but highly recommended
  • Social distance when possible
  • Use hand sanitizer

Please read our terms and conditions on our About page. You will be asked to agree to these and your response is mandatory. I will take a blank as meaning "yes" you agree.
