Horton Grove Nature Preserve: Walk, Read, and Connect

Details

Join us for a Sunday afternoon walk at Horton Grove Nature Preserve north of Durham, which includes trails along a meadow as well as through the woods. We'll walk 3 to 4 miles, with a stop along the way to read, rest, meditate, draw, or other quiet activity for 20-30 minutes.

We’ll still plan to walk if it’s drizzling or raining lightly. But if there’s heavy rain in the forecast, we’ll reschedule and send a notice to the group by the morning of the event.

Meet at 4:00 pm on Sunday May 19 at the parking lot for Horton Grove Nature Preserve, on Jock Road in Bahama, NC. https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZZ9fcvK3di6iJRty6 The last mile or so of Jock Road before you reach the parking lot is a gravel road, and you'll pass some historic sites like an old barn and some slave cabins from the 1850s, that were once part of Stagville Plantation, one of the largest in North Carolina before the Civil War. Read more about the people who lived here and plan to stop to see these historic buildings after our hike (there are separate parking spaces near them, about a mile from where we'll gather for the hike).

We hope to see some of the "regulars" there, and to meet new folks! This group is a great way to meet people who both enjoy walking in nature and reading and talking about books and ideas.

[ Note - if you've signed up and it later turns out you are no longer able to attend, please change your RSVP so we know that you are no longer coming and don't wait for you at the trailhead and delay the rest of the group's walk. Also, in cases where there's a waitlist, it will free up your spot for someone else if you can no longer come. Unfortunately there have been several people who sign up every time and never show up, so we'll be instituting a "three strikes and you're out" policy - if you're a no-show several times (without changing your RSVP) you will be removed from the group. Thanks for being courteous and letting us know if you can no longer make it! ]
