Horton Grove Nature Preserve: Walk, Read, and Connect

Details
Join us for a Sunday morning walk at Horton Grove Nature Preserve north of Durham, which includes trails along a meadow as well as through the woods. We'll walk about 3 miles, with a stop along the way to read, rest, meditate, draw, or other quiet activity for 20-30 minutes.
Meet at 9:00am on Sunday July 27 at the parking lot for Horton Grove Nature Preserve, on Jock Road in Bahama, NC. [https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZZ9fcvK3di6iJRty6 ](https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZZ9fcvK3di6iJRty6) The last mile or so of Jock Road before you reach the parking lot is a gravel road, and you'll pass some historic sites like an old barn and some cabins from the 1850s where enslaved people lived. This area was once part of Stagville Plantation, one of the largest plantations in North Carolina before the Civil War, and some of the history of that time is preserved here. Read more about the people who lived here and plan to stop to see these historic buildings after our hike (there are separate parking spaces near them, about a mile from where we'll gather for the hike).
We'll get started a few minutes after 9:00am and will aim to be back at the parking lot around 11:00am.
We’ll still plan to walk if it’s drizzling or raining lightly. But if there’s heavy rain or other extreme weather in the forecast, we’ll reschedule and send a notice by the morning of the event to people who have registered.
We hope to see some of the "regulars" there, and to meet new folks! This group is a great way to meet people who both enjoy walking in nature and reading and talking about books and ideas.
A couple of other notes:
- If you sign up and later realize you can no longer come, please change your RSVP to indicate that, so it will open up your space for someone on the waitlist. If you're on the waitlist, check Meetup and your notifications up to the day before the event, because often people drop out late and spaces open up at the last minute.
- Participation in this hike and any of the events organized by this group are at your own risk. These hikes are on public and well-used trails, but there may be dangers like tripping over tree roots, snake or insect bites, poison ivy, or other unpredictable risks. By joining this event you agree not to hold the organizers responsible for any injuries, and that you understand that you participate at your own risk.
See you soon!
