Beginner Longsword Class
Details
Immediately after our regular longsword training session on Saturday we hold an intro class for anyone interested in getting started with German longsword. This class is designed to take a slower, more personalized pace than our regular session and will introduce beginners to the basic concepts of the Liechtenauer tradition of German swordsmanship, including fundamentals of posture, footwork, stances, basic cuts and thrusts, defense with the Hengen, and the principles of vor, nach, indes, hart, weich. Students typically start in the introductory class for a few months until they have the foundation necessary to keep up with the pace of the main group.
Feel free to come early to watch the end of our regular session. Also, note that if we're not expecting any new students on a particular day, we'll probably leave before noon so please RSVP so we know to expect you. Anyone, regardless of previous experience, is welcome. No equipment is necessary for the beginner class, though please come dressed in exercise clothes and don't forget to bring water.
Please note: In order for members to particpate we need everyone to sign a participation waiver. Although we do everything we can to train safely and effectively, with all martial arts there is always a risk of injury. These waivers ensure that no one, participants and teachers a like, is put in undue legal risk. Both forms can be found at http://hemaalliance.com/?page_id=1019 . Please print, sign, and bring both forms to practice. Waivers will also be available at pratice if you need them. Thanks!
The map provided by meetup may be wrong. Here's how to find us:
The park has two entrances. Be sure to take the eastern-most one. It'll be the smaller parking lot underneath the dam, not the lot with the Sertoma Art Center. From that lot, take the park entrance (with the stairs) that goes through the trees and over the bridge, not the one that follows Millbrook back up the road. After you cross the bridge, you will go up a hill toward the lake. You will see a large open field straight ahead. You should see us with the sword equipment.
