Laura owns her own practice in Chapel Hill, NC and will be sharing with us some of the lessons she has learned from starting her own business. The title of Laura’s talk will be “Doctor Heal Thyself: Employment Practices at a Small Employment Law Firm.”
While Laura has been a lawyer for almost 20 years, she didn’t become a small business owner until about 4 years ago. She did not immediately put into practice many of the policies that she advocated to her clients. However, she has since become a strong believer in creating clear and consistent employment practices whether your company has 1 employee or 100 employees.
She will share the most important employment laws that even a micro-business needs to understand and ways to minimize its risk of litigation by making sure it is in compliance with these laws.
(If you need more detail on this, please see Laura after the presentation. The laws she will discuss are: the Fair Labor Standards Act, the North Carolina Wage and Hour Act, and North Carolina's Employment Security Act. Some concepts covered will include Employment at Will, Independent Contractors vs. Employees, and using employment forms like applications, offer letters, termination letters, non-disclosure agreements and separation agreements).

About Laura Noble
The background that led Laura to a boutique employment law practice isn’t typical. After graduating from the the University of Maryland School of Law with honors, Laura moved to New York and worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn. In addition to jury trials on felony and misdemeanor cases, ADA Noble was responsible for on-scene and precinct investigations for high publicity and serious violent crimes. From there, Laura joined a midsize civil litigation firm in Manhattan where she successfully litigated state and federal claims including employment claims. After that, she became Deputy Director for Advocacy and Legal Services at Covenant House in New York. Only a few hops, skips and jumps landed Laura in North Carolina and to her own firm.
