The One Where The Air Is Thin. (Mexico Grand Prix)
Details
We saw a very uncharacteristic mistake from Oscar in the Sprint race which screwed Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard had a good lead up to the sprint, qualifying well and showing potential for a good points haul for the Aston Martin team. Unfortunately it all came to naught at the first turn when Piastri took an ill-advised cut back to the inside and collided with a charging Hulkenberg. The result was that Alonso's race ended early. I'm pretty sure nothing else of importance was impacted.
McLaren say they went conservative on their set-up for the race which is why they weren't as competitive as expected. Oscar was certainly off the pace for most of the weekend. That's 2 bad race weekends in a row for the Aussie and the press are eating it up. You might be asking, "Dan, does this mean you're changing your mind about Max's chances to swoop in and take the driver's title?" And the answer is a resounding, "No!"
While I admit that McLaren occasionally rivals Ferrari in their foot-shooting ability, there are a lot of moving parts and it is still very unlikely that Red Bull can continue to perform at the highest level while McLaren performs at the lowest level for every single remaining race. So, look for McLaren to bounce back in general and Oscar in particular.
Notable performances-
- Max walked away with every point he could get. Props where due.
- Ollie Bearman looked very racy all weekend and bagged some great points for HAAS at their home race.
- Hulkenberg was on the pace all weekend and was unlucky in the Sprint. Otherwise a strong performance.
Notable misses-
- Ocon. Estee-Bestee was nowhere all weekend. A fact driven home painfully by his teammate scoring points.
- Williams had good pace but neither of the drivers were able to capitalize on it.
- Hadjar didn't show up.
The Teams head to Mexico City where the air will be thin and the tension will be thick!. We'll be back at Chow Pizza. Hope to see you all there!
