Skeptics in the (Outdoor) Pub - Boxyard RTP Social Event

Details

Spring is here, and it's time for another in-person social event! Let's gather again at Boxyard RTP. Several food vendors are available, and Fullsteam Brewery has a taproom on site; see the link above for details.

There's no set agenda for this one, just good times with fellow critical thinkers. We usually sit on the upper level, so when you arrive, find us by looking up for the logo banner on the railing.

Agenda:
6:30 - 7:00: Meet and greet; magic trick
7:00 - until: Unstructured social event

How to be:
Come with an open but critical mind, awareness of your own biases, and respect for your fellow humans. Attendees are expected to abide by the following guidelines:

  • Listen up. Your fellow skeptics want to hear your opinion and questions – but first they want to hear the speaker's presentation. Don’t interrupt the speaker or dominate the discussion, and don't spam the chat with irrelevant or snarky banter in the case of an online-only event. Our invited speakers usually prefer that you hold your questions until the end, and we always strive to honor the speaker's wishes in this regard. If you run afoul of this guideline, you will receive one warning, after which an organizer will put you in timeout. A third strike will result in your removal from the meeting.
  • Speak up if you are comfortable doing so! We enjoy a lively discussion. If you're feeling shy during an online event, consider using the chat function. When we have fewer than about eight online attendees, we rarely use the "raise hand" facility.
  • Be honest. Most of us come to these meetings because we want to improve our own faculties of critical thinking, science literacy, and media literacy through the presentation and discussion. That can happen only when we share what we really thought or felt about the presentation.
  • Be respectful. You can disagree with the speaker or a fellow attendee, but always do so respectfully. Ask questions. Avoid ad-hominem (personal) attacks. Keep an open mind – but not so open that your brains fall out.

Acknowledgment: These guidelines borrow liberally from this post.

COVID-19 safety measures

Event will be outdoor
Restrooms are available for handwashing. Fun fact: Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are ineffective for preventing norovirus infection!
The event host is instituting the above safety measures for this event. Meetup is not responsible for ensuring, and will not independently verify, that these precautions are followed.
