On 23 December 1996, French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier was found murdered outside her holiday home near Toormore, County Cork. Suspicion long centred on nearby British journalist Ian Bailey, who was never charged in Ireland but was convicted in absentia by a Paris court in 2019. Ireland declined extradition on evidentiary grounds, and the case remains officially unsolved.
