Grounds of Rideau Hall + Tavern on the Falls [join waitlist]
Details
I went to Tavern on the Falls for the first time recently and loved it, so I thought this would make a nice small-group outing: a relaxed wander through the grounds of Rideau Hall, followed by a walk over to Tavern on the Falls to check out the view.
There’s something wonderfully Canadian about Rideau Hall: it’s the official residence and workplace of the Governor General, Rideau Cottage on the grounds is currently used as the Prime Minister’s residence, and the public can still wander the lawns, gardens, paths, trees, and quiet corners. It feels formal and casual at the same time.
We’ll meet at MacKay Gate at Rideau Hall, then walk through part of the grounds at an easy pace. This won’t be a formal tour — more of a casual self-guided wander with time to look around, take photos, and enjoy the space.
Some possible highlights include the Canadian Heritage Garden, a sweeping arc of roses that reflects the cultural mosaic of Canadian society; the Fountain of Hope, originally built in honour of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope; and the exterior of Rideau Hall, including the Royal Coat of Arms carved into the residence facade. We won’t be touring inside Rideau Hall, since indoor tours require advance reservations.
After that, we’ll continue over to Tavern on the Falls, which has a great view near Rideau Falls and the Ottawa River. The organized part of the event will end there after we’ve had a chance to take in the view. I’ll probably stay and order something, and anyone who’d like to join me for food or drinks is welcome to.
New people are very welcome. It’s completely fine to come on your own.

NOTES
Feel free to join the waitlist as spots often open up.
This is a free event, aside from anything you choose to buy at Tavern on the Falls.
Pet note: As much as I like dogs, this will unfortunately need to be a pet-free event so we can respect Rideau Hall’s visitor guidelines.
Weather note: Since this event is mostly outdoors, I may postpone if the weather looks unpleasant. I’d rather do it on a nicer day than try to turn it into something it isn’t. I’ll post an update closer to the event.
Getting there / parking: There is some free street parking in the surrounding neighbourhood, and Rideau Hall can be entered on foot through nearby gates. I’ll add more detailed parking and transit notes in the event discussion so the main description doesn’t get too cluttered.
H.O.P.E. Volleyball is happening the same day, so I know a few people may already be busy. If that’s you, have a great time — we’ll catch you at a future Try Anything Once event.
