Owl Creek CG
Details
Not too far from Clifton and Safford. Owl Creek CG has 7 big spots that can accommodate two cars each. Cost is $5/day for each spot, and cannot be reserved in advance. Pay at the CG in a drop box.
I limited the RSVP to 10 in case there are people already there when we arrive. Sign up if you want to go, you may end up on the wait list, but if the place is empty when we arrive I will move you to "Going," up to the CG limit of 14 people.
No non-member guests this time please unless they share your vehicle/camper.
I did not see a firepit anywhere, just grills at each spot. I don't think they would like us to build one, just based on how clean and organized this CG is. So let's bring propane so we can at least have a spot to gather, we can just pick a spot where there is room and gather around the propane firepits.
I will bring my ammo can propane ring, if someone else could volunteer to bring one additional propane pit and one other person agree to bring one propane container, and please post in the comments so we know it has been taken care of.
Like we discussed at our last 2 camps, we can take turns with propane supply, on the honor system. When it feels like it is your turn, just step up. (We likely won't need to worry about this until the summer rolls around again after this.)
Temperatures in October in this area 78/48.
Altitude at camp 3503 ft.
Vault bathrooms and trash receptacles available. Each spot has a grill and a covered picnic table. No potable water available.
Located in the Gila Box National Riparian Conservation Area. Some rock hounding, pretty views and a trail down to the river. Trails nearby. The river can be seen from the east side camp spots. Plan B CG if too many spots are taken by other people, would be Riverview CG near Safford.
The CG is 4 miles from Rte. 191 on a well maintained dirt road, with some washboard, but accessible to all vehicles.
On the way to the CG on the dirt road there was a side road with a sign that said Gillard Hot Springs. https://www.hotspringshub.com/locations/usa/arizona/gillard
If you plan to go early please let us know.
From recreation.gov website:
The campground is a stop on the Black Hills Back Country Byway, and it is also just a quarter mile from the Gila River Boat Put-in. A trail starts near the kiosk to provide a path down to the Old Safford Bridge Picnic Area or the Gila River Boat Put-In. Owl Creek Campground provides visitors with a beautiful view of the riparian area and Guthrie Peak, one of the highest points in Greenlee County.
