See description of Stockton Pass below. Not as close to Chiricahua National Monument as Pinery Canyon, but still close enough to make the visit, which I highly recommend. I spent 2 days scouting the area, and it rained about half of that time, with a couple of short but severe storms, so we can watch the weather, and maybe prepare for at least some rain on this camp.
it is 30 miles to Safford and 40 miles to Wilcox, fyi.
I will give coords for the BLM spot and overflow can go to the CG. Or we may reserve the group spot. Check back in the comments.
Both the BLM site and the CG (less than 1 mi away from the BLM) had just received a lot of rain, and since the terrain is sandy and not muddy my van did fine. Tar road right up to the entrance to the BLM site and the CG. You sink a little bit into the sand, but still can navigate, much like driving on the beach. The scenery is breathtaking but you will get sand on your vehicle and rig, unless they have had no rain, so you just have to decide if the scenery is worth a little sand on things.
