Lake Mary/ Coconino Forest/Flagstaff
Details
This camp is about 20 minutes south of Flag. It is a CG with lots of spots, and another CG a mile up the road for overflow.
Lake Mary refers to the two reservoirs in northern AZ about 20 minutes southeast of Flagstaff; Upper Lake Mary (the southernmost one, because it is upstream from the other) and Lower Lake Mary. This area is great for birding (bald eagle and blue heron) and the lakes contain nine species for fishing, and unrestricted boating/kayaking is allowed. Elevation 6890. Temps expected on this weekend 75/48. + signal
The camp area has tall pine trees off a dirt road with lots of shade. The road is tar right up until the last mile or so. There is a trailhead within walking distance to the camp.
This is a dispersed area with no amenities. The final 0.2 miles to the camp spot is dirt road with some bumps and small rocks, just go slow and you will be fine. I went in with my low clearance van with no trouble. Watch for pine branches overhead. There are several firepits. Camping is first-come-first-served (fcfs), and so you may be near campers you don’t know. If possible, reserve spots for the group if you arrive early.
Ashurst Lake is nearby, although I've been told the road to it is very rough and rocky. They allow non-motorized canoeing, windsurfing, kayaking, fishing and also good for birding. Mormon Lake also, but no boating or access to it other than to view it from the pull off area.
The Lowell Observatory (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowell_Observatory ) is also nearby.
I will send the group text the Sunday before the camp so please be sure and update your final RSVP by then. Cancelations after the Sunday group text are considered last minute cancels.
