Are you afraid to drive Redington Pass Road? Maybe you've heard that the road is in poor condition, or that there are naked hikers around Tanque Verde Falls? Well, both of those are true, but this hike goes only a little way in, and is safe for both the family sedan and the family. (I can only promise a "probably" on that last one.)

GETTING TO THE TRAILHEAD: Drive Tanque Verde Road all the way east, until it becomes Redington Pass Road. Continue east. The road will turn from pavement to dirt. Less than a mile after that, park at the first parking lot on the left, Lower Tanque Verde Falls trailhead. The dirt road is fine if you take it slow.

** Carpool (optional): Meet at McDonald's at 9075 E Tanque Verde Road (corner of Catalina Highway) at 9:00. We will leave for the trailhead at 9:10.

THE HIKE: We'll take the Tanque Verde Rim Trail to an overlook of Middle Falls, with spectacular desert and canyon landscapes along the way. We'll continue along the rim, then descend to the creek between Middle and Upper Falls. We'll check out the creek, and then return to the rim. Finally, we'll cross Redington Road and finish the loop on the Rim Trail, overlooking a different canyon.

The hike is around 4 miles with about 500' of elevation gain. I rate it intermediate because there are some steep and rocky spots, and one optional scramble that has an easier alternative. Bring hiking poles if you use them.

Parking is free.
