Bear Down!, the hike (Advanced)
Details
"Bear Down!" is the motto of the University of Arizona's sports teams. It's also what we'll be doing: hiking down the Bear Canyon Trail and Bear Canyon.
Highlights include Seven Falls, views of Thimble Peak, numerous stream crossings, and a clever hike name. This hike is essentially a lighter version of BASH: the Big Ass Sabino Hike (tm) with less distance and elevation gain, because there is more descending than climbing.
ROUTE: Starting at Gordon Hirabayashi Campground, we will take the Arizona Trail to the Bear Canyon Trail. We'll stop at Seven Falls, then take the Seven Falls Trail to the Bear Canyon tram road. We will leave the tram road and exit at the Bear Canyon Trailhead.
Total distance is around 12 miles, with over 1000 feet of elevation gain.
LOGISTICS: Because this is a point-to-point hike, we'll meet at our destination, the Bear Canyon Trailhead. We will then carpool to Gordon Hirabayashi Campground to start the hike (about a 20 minute drive). Upon return to the Bear Canyon Trailhead, we will need drivers to take us to the cars at the campground.
Parking is free at both trailheads.
