Saturday's forecast is for a relatively cool high of 75, so good for a local desert hike. While some of you may have done the full Finger Rock-Pontatoc loop, for Saturday we will do only a 2 mile ascent up 1,380 feet to a small cave, then back down again for 4 miles roundtrip. This hike is rated INTERMEDIATE based on the steepness/ elevation gain. Accordingly, you should be in good hiking shape if you sign up.

The trail starts at the base of the combined Finger Rock/Pontatoc Trails, then quickly splits off. The first 1.1 has minimal grade, before the steep .9 mile ascent to our destination.

Our expected hike time is 2 1/4 hours, with an estimated total time of up to 3 hours, including rest/lunch at the cave. This equates to an average hiking speed of 1.8 miles per hour, which might be considered fast considering the elevation gain - sign up only if you are an experienced hiker and are comfortable with the elevation gain at a semi-fast pace.

Bring at least 1 liter of water for the 3 1/2 hour hike. You may want to bring lunch or snacks.

The parking lot may be full, although a late morning start may free up spaces with people leaving. You can also park on one side of the road and walk up. Plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early to deal with parking.

The forecast is for rain on Friday and Sunday. If this shifts to Saturday, I will postpone.
