Hey everyone, let's go explore Keystone Ancient Forest! Keystone Ancient Forest is a protected nature area in Sand Springs featuring rare old-growth cedars and post oaks, some over 300–500 years old. The trails wind through quiet woods, scenic overlooks, and wildlife habitat, offering a peaceful place to hike, birdwatch, and enjoy one of Oklahoma’s most unique preserved forests.

What's the plan?
The plan is to follow the Childers Trail, Frank Trail, and Wilson Trail Loop (this may be adjusted if necessary)!

When we visited the Redbud Valley Nature Preserve we took the time to slow down and take in the nature! People were finding and taking pictures of plants, mushrooms, etc. That is the intent of this event, to explore the natural area of Keystone Ancient Forest as well as getting some hiking in and good conversation!

What to Bring?

  • Appropriate footwear
  • Water
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • Optional: snacks, trekking poles, camera/binoculars

Trail Information:
🌲 Childers Trail
• Easy, 0.6-mile loop with a paved asphalt surface — great for all abilities and ADA-accessible right from the parking area. Perfect warm-up section!

🥾 Frank Trail
• Moderate and scenic at about 2.8 miles round-trip. Trail surface is compacted stone and bare soil. You’ll pass through forest deeper than the Childers path and enjoy opportunities to see old-growth trees and a scenic overlook associated with Washington Irving’s travels.

⛰ Wilson Trail
• More challenging ~1-mile loop with rugged, natural terrain. Narrower and rockier, this segment adds variety and a bit more adventure to the hike — not ADA-accessible but rewarding with forest views.

📍 Combined Loop (Childers + Frank + Wilson)
• Moderate ~3.7-mile loop, typically taking ~1.5–2 hours. Good mix of easy paved paths, rolling forest terrain, and bit of rugged trail on Wilson.
