Type Brigade №22: Building from Type

Type Brigade is Vancouver’s typography and type design meetup. We’re excited to announced that Type Brigade №22 will take place on October 29th.

This event’s theme is Building from Type, a look at how type is intertwined with our speaker’s present focus. We’ll get together at Mobify HQ in Yaletown (https://www.google.com/maps/place/948+Homer+St/@49.2780571,-123.119061,17z), one floor below where Bringhurst’s classic The Elements of Typographic Style was published.

Every other month, Type Brigade hosts two talks, one on type design and one typography. We have three speakers at this meetup—you’re going to learn a lot!

• Doors: 6:30PM
• Talks begin: 7:00PM
• No admittance during talks

Jenny Chow – Architecture and typography

Jenny Chow (http://jchow.me/) is a registered architect in Vancouver, but her work is decidedly international. She has designed work in Germany, Ireland, and Austria, in addition to the Alessi flagship store in New York City, and the winning design of the China Insurance Group Tower in Shenzhen, China. Previously, she worked in New York and Vienna, holds a Masters in Architecture and Bachelor in Environmental Design Studies from Dalhousie University in Halifax, and is now focused on the construction of Vancouver House as part of Dialog.

Alvin Kwan & Vince Lo – Practice and type design

Faculty (http://studiofaculty.com) is a studio founded by designers Alvin Kwan and Vince Lo. They focus on communication in various mediums—screen, print, and more—and value presentation with clarity, honesty, and sincerity. Their work has been recognised by Applied Arts, the Adobe Design Achievement Awards, HOW, and the GDC. Before this? They established Practice Type to house their initial foray into type design, which included the Chinese and Latin-supporting face, Collator.

Custom Numerals

We signify each Type Brigade with a new set of custom-lettered numerals. Last time, Riley Cran (https://twitter.com/rileycran) designed our fantastic №21. Leading up to the event, we’ll reveal the new №22 by our resident letterer Andrea Husky (http://instagram.com/andreahusky).
