Rowan Wright – Visualizing Expression
keeponcreative.com
Visualizing Expression investigates Rowan’s journey to visually depict ADHD. He has found that being authentic with hand-written musings and hand-lettered typography people gain a deeper connection with his work.
Why settle for a niche when you could dive into all sorts of different projects? Rowan Wright is a multidisciplinary designer with a passion for all things design, blending his love for different creative disciplines into a unique approach. Based out of Vancouver, BC, Rowan is driven by the desire to uncover the authentic human element that helps people connect and resonate with his work. While his primary focus is on brand design, his creative pursuits also extend to publication, motion graphics, and augmented reality. When not designing, Rowan works on his project, Visualize, which explores ADHD using the tagline ‘empathy through experience’. The project explores ADHD through zines, books, and AR that have tactile elements and allow the viewer to feel aspects of ADHD that go beyond traditional explanations.
Kalapi Gajjar – Typeface Design in the (Wide) Margins
universalthirst.com
In the last decade, typeface design for India's many scripts has seen tremendous growth in both original design and academic research. Despite being home to the world's largest population and having the highest number of scripts in use of any contiguous nation-state, India's typographic expression—particularly in the digital environment—leaves much to be desired. What has sparked this recent interest? What challenges do subaltern typeface designers currently face? And what does the future hold for the profession in the subcontinent? My talk attempts to answer some of these questions by reflecting on my professional practice and experiences mentoring aspiring typeface designers from India.
Kalapi Gajjar is a typeface designer and font engineer. His primary interest lies in developing original typeface designs for emerging typographic contexts in the Indian sub-continent along with historical and technological research. He's a graduate of the Master of Arts in Typeface Design programme from the University of Reading, UK. In 2016, he joined forces with friend and fellow Reading graduate Gunnar Vilhjálmsson to set-up Universal Thirst, a design practise specialising in developing typefaces for writing systems of the Indian sub-continent. Since its inception, Universal Thirst has taken on bespoke projects for Google, Apple, The Gourmand, Frieze Art Fair, DesignMarch, Monotype, and Falcon Enamelware.
