Christopher Rouleau – Sign Painting and the Rise of the Analog
https://christopherrouleau.com
https://instagram.com/chris_rouleauCreating letters by hand has been part of human lives for centuries. The tradition of sign painting as we know it emerged more concretely during the industrial revolution, with the expressed purpose of announcing or advertising products, services and events. The styles ranged from utilitarian to highly ornate. Sign painting (or sign writing) was a paid profession, as common as tailoring, farming or banking, and required hours of training and apprenticeship.
Sign painting is a perfect blend of draftsmanship and artistry, of rules and intuition, of precision and incongruity. With the emergence of the “slow movement” in the last decade, and a renewed interest in analog techniques – perhaps as a reaction against artificial intelligence and the technologies that dominate so many aspects of our lives – the demand for traditional sign painting has returned. Many small businesses prefer signs made by humans, not machines. People want art in their homes made by people, not factories. And those with an interest in typography and handmade letterforms (both professionals and hobbyists) are once again interested in painting letters by hand.
I will share my research and experience as a self-taught sign painter, and offer some insights into the rise of analog techniques, the increased demand for traditional sign painting, and why the handmade can co-exist in a digital world.
Zia Somjee & Kristian Hay – Type As Seen By Non-Type Designers
https://wearezak.com
https://www.instagram.com/wearezak/Zia Somjee and Kristian Hay make up two of the three founders of ZAK – a full service creative agency in Vancouver specialized in brand development and visual identity. Over the last 6 years, ZAK has helped clients big and small strengthen their brand voice through strategy, visual identity, and a multi-disciplinary approach to design.
ZAK approaches typography as one piece of a visual puzzle, something that can be used in bold and image-centric ways, or in more subtle and textural ways. Always asking the question, “how can this help tell a story”, ZAK has a specific viewpoint on type and the role it plays in visual communication.
