Platform Engineering at Uber

Details

Uber Tech Amsterdam is hosting their first in-person Meetup at our brand new office in the Zuidas. Come and join us as we meet our growing Platform Engineering team and find out more about the interesting projects they are working on, unique to Uber. This meetup will include two talks on how we manage data reliably for Uber’s operations in more than 70 countries.

Summary of the talks:

How Uber manages 100k databases by Egor Grishechko

At Uber, the Stateful Platform deploys and runs millions of containers on more than 80 000 hosts, managing exabytes of data across on-prem and cloud zones. The Odin platform allows teams to run database engines and other stateful systems at planet scale, with high availability, low cost, and a high degree of automation. Uber uses MySQL, Schemaless, Redis, ZooKeeper, Kafka, HDFS, YARN, and many other technologies. During the talk, I'll show how and why we successfully host such a large number of containers. Also, I'll put light on a few significant problems that were solved by the team.

Uber's Logging Evolution: Enabling near real-time production troubleshooting and root cause analysis at petabyte-scale by Maksym Ivanchenko

Join us for a deep dive into Uber’s innovative centralized logging platform, essential for streamlined production debugging and root cause analysis.
This system first evolved from the ELK stack to using ClickHouse and then to the most recent approach powered by Apache Pinot. Each iteration offered new capabilities and tackled unique challenges. We’ll explore Uber’s strategy behind handling the vast data flow generated by its microservices. We’ll cover the architectural choices, technical nuances, and insights from handling over 20 petabytes of near real-time logging data. Learn how Uber has mastered both speed and scale to ensure logs is instantly available for search and analysis.
