To the Cloud and Beyond: A Brief View of Cloud Computing Research at UC Berkeley

This month's meetup is the first in a series of vendor showcase meetups in which the UC Berkeley Cloud Computing Meetup asks for the vendor to provide research oriented applications of their cloud stacks.

Cloud computing is not only transforming IT but also but it fundamentally changing the way we do research in computer science and machine learning. Over the past decade, the RAD Lab, AMP Lab, and now RISE Lab have produced research and software artifacts that have literally helped define the modern cloud and the software systems that run on it.

In this talk, Dr. Joseph Gonzalez will present a brief overview of the recent history of these labs, their structural properties that enable transformative research, and some of their key academic and software contributions. He will give an overview some of our recent work exploring the value of elasticity in machine learning and then transition to a short discussion on the broader server-less computing trajectory of the cloud. Along the way, he will highlight some observations about our experience using on-premise and cloud infrastructure in research. He will then conclude, with a brief discussion on the next major lab at UC Berkeley examining the inevitability of utility computing and the multi-cloud future. He will try to keep the talk relatively high-level and open for lively discussion.

Short Bio: Joseph Gonzalez is the co-directory of the UC Berkeley RISE Lab where he studies the design of Real-time, Intelligent, Secure, and Explainable systems. He is also a member of the Berkeley AI Research Group. Gonzalez's research addresses problems in neural network design, computer vision, natural language processing, prediction serving, cloud computing, and autonomous vehicles. Gonzalez also helped develop the Data Science program at UC Berkeley and co-created Data100 which is now taught to over 1200 students a semester. Gonzalez’s innovative work has earned him significant recognition, including the Okawa Research Grant, NSF Early Career Award, and the NSF Expedition Award.

Everyone is welcome - this is a really inclusive group! You don't have to be an expert, or already know about cloud technologies; we get together so people can learn from each other.

CONNECT VIA ZOOM: Our Zoom connection info changes each month and is posted here in meetup invite. [Note: for security reasons attendees must be logged into a Zoom account]
