Title: The UX of mentorship: a mentor - mentee perspective by Teodora Blindu and Reece Quinones (http://09creative.com)

Abstract: One important factor of being a successful, well rounded creative is continually finding mentors throughout your career. They can help guide you during your creative lifespan and constantly push you. Reece and Teodora will share with you from the perspective of a mentor & mentee relationship what are the things you should look for in a mentor, the goals and benefits of this type of relationship and the different types of mentors you can have.

Bios: Teodora Blindu moved to Berlin by way of Washington DC, where one of her first mentors was Reece. She is a UI Designer at Goodpatch and a mentor at Career Foundry.

Before joining Goodpatch, Teodora lived in Brussels and Washington DC where she worked for Weber Shandwick and several non-profit organisations. She is a strong advocate for design, having served on the board of AIGA-DC and Creative Mornings Brussels team. Teodora has a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from George Mason University.

Reece Quiñones is visiting us all the way from Washington DC and was one of Teodora’s first mentors. She has over 20 years of experience leading client engagements and executing creative strategy solutions through print, advertising, digital/web, user experience, and motion design in the non-profit and for-profit arenas.

Reece has a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of Maryland and a M.F.A. in Integrated Design at the University of Baltimore. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Design at George Mason University.

Title: Shit UX - Everything I learned about design by going to the toilet

Abstract: Like so many people in our industry I blame Don Norman. Ever since reading “The Design of Everyday Things” it is literally impossible to take any design, interaction or service for granted whether it’s digital or in "real life”. One does not simply use something without thinking about affordances, conceptual models or micro interactions and getting on every body else’s nerves about it.

This obsession made me think about design decisions regarding one of the most human but often overlooked interactions: "nipping around the back", "spending a penny", “doing a number 2" or in plain English: going to the toilet. In many ways designing the Toilet Experience (TX) is like designing forms: almost everybody uses them, hardly anybody talks about them, they don’t win awards and when done badly things get really messy.

In my talk I will discuss some of the Elements of Toilet Experience that I believe we can use to teach anyone outside our industry cubicle basic principles of UX, Service and Interaction Design.

Bio: Clive is a Freelance UX Person with a focus on research, strategy and design based in Berlin where he also co-organises the annual UXcamp Europe and local UX Book Club.

He has more than 10 years of experience helping various agencies and in-house teams to make their users and clients happy and particularly enjoys working in collaborative environments with as much fun and little ego as possible.

A self-proclaimed Digital Do-Gooder he is also constantly looking for ways to use his experience for social good and as the son of a German mother and an English father he is also very good at being annoyingly pedantic while drinking large amounts of tea.
