The Iliad is **an epic poem written by** the Greek poet, **Homer** in the 8 th century BC. **One of the oldest extant works of literature,** it is regarded as the first substantial piece of European literature that has been widely read from the day it was written until today. It was used as a textbook in the ancient Greek world and **played a crucial role for the development of not only the Greek culture but also of the Western civilization. **
