UmbraCymru - Virtual Umbraco Meetup, September 2024

Details

It's time for the fifth virtual UmbraCymru Umbraco meetup of 2024!

This month, Umbraco MVP Terence Burridge will be exploring the performance of Umbraco on low-cost, low-power platforms, comparing Raspberry Pi and other recycled mini PCs, while considering the impact of recent .NET updates on CMS performance and sustainability.

Agenda

Since the move to .net core for Umbraco, and the better opening up of Linux as a hosting platform, a default position which is often fallen to by developers is 'Hey, I can now host this on a Raspberry Pi', largely as it has the biggest name recognition. I've been challenging whether there are better options out there for developers who want to run Umbraco on their own low-cost platforms inhouse, either just for development or even small public production personal sites.

Looking at various iterations of the Raspberry Pi alongside a variety of other cheap and recycled mini PC platforms, such as repurposed Android TV boxes, thin clients and repurposed ex-corporate workstation machines. Before running a series of simulated Umbraco workloads to tax them for how a typical developer may use it.

After first starting this project last year, we've seen the move from .net 7 to .net 8 a move which Microsoft has heavily touted as bringing huge performance improvements. So now using versions of both Umbraco 12 and 13, during the talk I also take a look at just what a difference recent changes in the underlying framework have made to the performance of the CMS too, and how this further impacts the ability to run it on lower power platforms.

Ultimately the goal is to see whether there are better options when balancing cost against performance, as well as considering the wider sustainability benefits if it means giving an existing 'old' device a new lease of life rather than incurring the overhead from a new device having to be manufactured.
