umBristol Talks - July 2024 - Codegarden Recap

Details

Hey folks,

We've got another fantastic lineup of talks for you in July, hosted by True Digital. Refreshments will be provided for the evening.

This month is a recap of what happened at the international Umbraco conference, Codegarden! It's a great opportunity to catch up if you missed it, or reminisce if you didn't. We also have 2 talks from the big event, presented by some of our very own umBristolians!

The talks for the evening will be:

  • Codegarden recap by Sean Thorne
  • "The Bittersweet Reality of Diabetes Tech: Navigating Accessibility and the importance of testing" by Georgina Bidder
Over the past decade, the advancement of technology aimed at enhancing the lives of people with diabetes has been significant. From innovative devices powered by clever algorithms to medical alert dogs, a diverse range of tools now exists to assist. With over 25 years of first-hand experience managing type 1 diabetes, I have tried and tested many of these. However, despite my gratitude, I do wonder if someone ever sat down with people with diabetes and asked "Is this what you want?"
  • "Fighting ghosts and monsters: How we prevent scary hallucinations in our AI platforms" by Matt Sutherland
In this talk I will discuss how we can protect ourselves against data bias. How the quality, quantity, and representative nature of the data used to train an AI system directly affects its ability to perform and I will highlight some of the examples where this has not been the case and where remarkable (and scary) AI hallucinations have occurred.

Agenda (subject to change):

  • 6:00 PM - Doors open
  • 6:15 PM - Food and drinks
  • 6:30 PM - Welcome and Codegarden Recap
  • 6:40 PM - Talks commence
  • 7:40 PM - Socialising/decamp to pub to watch the England game! (See comments below to join us)

Hope to see you there!
