umBristol Codegarden Talks & Recap - July 2025

Details

Hey folks,

We've got another fantastic lineup of talks for you this month, hosted by Gibe. Refreshments will be provided for the evening.

The talks for the evening will be:

  • Codegarden Recap by Lili Rossiter
Lili will give us a short recap of Codegarden 2025 to fill in those who weren't there and instil a sense of nostalgia for those who were.
  • "From Functional to Successful: How to continually solve problems and not make new ones" by Georgina Bidder and Steph Peschel
Are you building solutions that solve problems - or just adding more features? Too often, teams work from an "inside-out" mindset, juggling internal demands and cramming in functionality without knowing if it truly delivers.
We can tie ourselves in knots trying to build everything for everyone and still end up with a product that lacks impact. It can be easy to forget that multiple different users work on a platform, whether that is the content editors, end users, or developers. So it can be difficult to meet actual needs.
Through case studies and technical insights, we’ll examine the wins and challenges of user testing. We'll arm you with a suite of technology tools to help connect structured testing with real user behaviour and how you can move towards a user-centered approach, at any point in your project and without breaking budgets.
This will help you shift from only delivering features to delivering value. The best platforms aren’t just functional; they’re successful.
  • "Revamping the media section (Making the dream a reality)" by Steve Temple
    I have a dream...
A dream where the Umbraco media section works much more effectively and is far more friendly for editors. I've also sat in a CG talk by Jeffrey Shoemaker here he shared some of his dreams for Umbraco and his dream on media was very similar to mine. So you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one!
In fact this will be the third talk on this, but all the solutions I've demonstrated before have been hacks, or trying to get AI to solve the problem. Since the advent of v14 and the new backoffice I think the dream can now become reality.
I'll show how you can build a module that will replace the media section and media pickers with custom versions which support new ways of interacting with media. Then I'll show how you can then build on that to bolt in 3rd party media management products, or use AI to categorise media or identify duplicates.
Modules like this could entirely change the backoffice experience for your editors.
