This first conversation brings together a small group of strangers around one shared question:
💭“How does multilingualism reshape thought, communication, and the way we interact with the world?”
> Context: Language doesn’t just help us communicate, it shapes how we think, remember, and relate to others. Research in linguistics and cognitive science suggests that multilingual speakers often develop greater cognitive flexibility and an increased ability to shift perspectives. For example, studies comparing English and Spanish show that English tends to emphasize the agent of an action (“She broke the glass”), while Spanish more often allows the action itself to take focus (“Se rompió el vaso”), which can subtly influence how responsibility and intent are perceived.
> Different languages highlight different aspects of reality, from time and emotion to relationships and identity. In a multilingual world, this raises deeper questions: does speaking more than one language change or expand how we understand others? Does it change how we see ourselves? This conversation invites participants to explore how language shapes thought, identity, and everyday interaction, both personally and collectively.
