United Nations Day - Our Planet, Our Future

Millions of people are already suffering from the catastrophic effects of extreme disasters exacerbated by climate change. The effects of the climate crisis will continue to grow and worsen over time, compounding and magnifying existing inequalities—creating ruin for current and future generations. We’ll discuss human rights compliant solutions and what we can today to help. Be prepared to be active!
Speakers:
Zeke Johnson is the Senior Director of Programs at Amnesty International USA. He leads the organization's team of thematic issue experts working to end human rights violations in the United States and around the world. He has represented the organization before the United Nations Committee Against Torture and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights; testified before members of Congress about US drone strikes; served as a trial monitor of the military commissions at US Naval Station Guantanamo Bay; and served as a human rights observer in Standing Rock, Baltimore and Ferguson. His analysis has been cited by the Associated Press, BBC, CNN, McClatchy, New York Times, NPR, Reuters, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and other media.

Kavita Desai is Adviser on Sustainable Development and Global Policy with the United Nations Foundation. She was Adviser to the Permanent Mission of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to the United Nations from 2010-2016. t. She negotiated the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda, advocating for the inclusion of SDG 16 on peaceful societies. She also represented the Group of 77 and China during negotiations on 'Women in Development' between 2012 and 2016. Ms. Desai is a native of New Jersey, and a graduate of Rutgers University College. She received her Juris Doctorate from Pace University Law School with certificates in both environmental and international law.
