Victor Ordu, MBBS, is a Nigerian data scientist, public health consultant, and open-source software advocate whose journey combines clinical medicine, environmental health regulation, and cutting-edge data science. After ten years practising as a medical doctor in diverse Nigerian healthcare settings, Victor discovered the transformative power of data in shaping health policy and outcomes. This revelation led him to embrace R as his principal analytic tool and to devote himself to making scientific computing more accessible and reproducible.

In 2022, Victor was selected for rOpenSci’s inaugural Champions Programme, where he collaborated with mentors and peers to develop sustainable, community-focused software. His flagship project, **naijR**, provides a suite of functions for retrieving and visualising Nigerian spatial and political data with minimal dependencies. Guided by the rOpenSci peer-review process, Victor shepherded **naijR** from its initial proposal through rigorous community review to its CRAN release in December 2023. He continues to maintain and improve the package, responding to user feedback and extending its functionality.

Alongside his development work, Victor is a certified RStudio Tidyverse instructor. He designs and delivers workshops for universities, non-governmental organisations and private-sector teams across Nigeria, teaching tools such as **dplyr**, **ggplot2** and **tidyr** in hands-on sessions that emphasise reproducibility and best practices. His recorded webinar on **naijR** has guided analysts through real-world mapping scenarios, empowering researchers to create clear, actionable insights from raw data.

Victor’s unique combination of medical training, public health expertise and open-source leadership has positioned him as a thought leader in Africa’s data science community. Whether mentoring new contributors, refining package documentation or presenting at conferences, he remains committed to the principles of openness, collaboration and education—ensuring that the benefits of data science extend far beyond the laboratory and into impactful real-world applications.
