Eugene Richards is a photographer, writer, and filmmaker known for his up close, deeply personal, real-life storytelling. During this one-hour presentation, the veteran photographer will present a series of photographs from his most recent publications: Do I Know You? and In This Brief Life, while discussing the wonders and complexities of his wide-ranging work. Published this year by Many Voices Press, DO I KNOW YOU? is a sequencing of photographic stories in color that speak of the diversity of America, of survival, the shadows cast by slavery, crime, imprisonment, poverty, incomprehensible loss, the longing for love, what it means to be beautiful.
In This Brief Life (Many Voices Press, 2023) is a collection of black-and-white photographs, from Richards’s early documentation of sharecropper life in the Arkansas Delta throughout his lifetime as a photographer. These are photographs that he hadn’t shown or exhibited before, had missed at first glance, had thought too personal, had forgotten.
