About us
What is the meeting about?
This meeting gives an opportunity to people who hold Unitarian Christian beliefs but whose ideas do not align with existing non-trinitarians Christian denominations to come together and talk about their faith.
Unitarian Christianity has been particularly defined and written on by William Ellery Channing, an American pastor of the 19th century. Channing's writings are beautiful, filled with veneration for God, and they promote a vision of Christianity based on humbleness, moderation, rationality and personal responsability and action.
The meeting could take a different form depending on what we wish to discuss on the day, this could include:
-focus on a specific topic for the session
-read passages from the Bible
-read William Ellery Channing's works and reflect on what Unitarian Christianity is about and what it means to us
-talk about what we personally believe
-use prompt cards to ask questions and find answers together.
What is Unitarian Christianity?
Below are some important points of original Unitarian Christianity:
-belief in one God
-belief that God is infinitely good, kind, benevolent
-Jesus is human, he is not God
-Jesus was a special, an exceptional human, sent by God to effect a moral, spiritual deliverance of mankind.
-The Bible was written by humans and is not infaillible. The spiritual content of the Bible is to be enjoyed, but we still need to use our reason when reading it, we cannot follow it blindly and literally.
-For many aspects in Unitarian Christianity, there is room for interpretation and personal belief. For example, whether you believe some events in the Bible happened in reality or some of them might have been more symbolic/illustrative, this is not an issue which should cause divide. People can still be united in the Unitarian faith, as they believe in one God and follow the moral example of Jesus.
For more info on Unitarian Christianity, you can check the images on this page: they are quotes from Channing's works and give you more perspective on what Unitarian Christianity is.
Note about the meeting
This meeting is not a Unitarian Universalist, Biblical Unitarian or a Jehovah's Witness meeting. This meeting might be especially useful to people who hold a Unitarian belief in God, but do not fully align with ideas or dogmas in the denominations mentioned above.
Everyone is welcome to attend, no matter what their religion is. The point of the meeting is to exchange ideas respectfully and to provide a place for anyone who wants to talk about Unitarian Christianity freely.
About the organiser:
I have been interested in Unitarian Christianity for some time and delved into William Ellery Channing's works recently, and would welcome the opportunity to discuss this with people who are also interested in the Unitarian Christian faith. I find great spiritual nourishment in the Unitarian Christian faith and regret that there is no church around with a Unitarian perspective such as defined by Channing. I think religion is even more special when shared with others, so this is my attempt to try and find people with a similar conception of religion.
