Science Behind: The Perseid shower occurs every year when Earth passes through the ancient debris trail left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. As Earth slams into this stream of dust and ice particles at roughly 60 kilometers per second (130,000 mph), the friction vaporizes the debris, creating the glowing streaks we see as shooting stars
