The Magic of Wool
Details
Before making flowers, let's take a few minutes to understand what happens when wool turns into felt.
Wool is a remarkable fiber. If you look at a single wool fiber under a microscope, you would see that it is covered with tiny scales, much like the shingles on a roof. These scales are what make wool unique.
When we add warm water and soap, the scales begin to open. As we rub, roll, and agitate the fibers, those tiny scales catch onto one another. The fibers become more and more entangled until they can no longer be pulled apart. What began as fluffy wool transforms into a strong piece of fabric called felt.
This process is one of the oldest textile-making methods in the world. Unlike weaving or knitting, no loom, needles, or thread are required. We are simply encouraging the wool fibers to connect with each other. Today we will be using this ancient process to create beautiful flowers. The colors and shapes are entirely up to you, each flower a unique work of art.
