Unity Wings Class
Details
Unity is a practical, positive and progressive approach to Christianity. Unity Wings is a "Sunday Morning Experience" that explores the practical teachings of Charles Fillmore for developing our thinking and feeling nature, the positive emotions that Positive Psychologists say broadens and builds our life and leads to human flourishing and the progressive nature of our Spiritual instincts that Cognitive Scientists are discovering is the basis for our development as human beings.
The structure of our Sunday mornings and the core of the content that will be covered is based on the lessons of the classic Unity Society Correspondence Course (http://dev.truthunity.net/correspondence-school/series1/lesson-1-prayer). This course was used by the Unity School from 1909 until 1973 to train lay students and ministers. Prior to 1931, it was the required training to become a Unity minister. After 1931 it was the required pre-requisite for entering the ministerial training program. This material will be available at the class.
The positive effect of Unity's classic teachings on human flourishing is now being corroborated by research in the new fields of Positive Psychology and Cognitive Science, represented in this course by two books: Positivity by Barbara Frederickson and Spiritual Evolution by George Vaillant. Each Sunday lesson and discussion will pull from these books. There are plenty of inexpensive used copies that you can order online.
Our first class is scheduled at 9 am for ten Sundays starting January 22, 2012 and running through March 25. We intend to continue the series, taking off the months of April, August and December. You are welcome to join at any time.
We meet in the Arts & Crafts Room, which is at the back side of The Baca Center, leading out to the large patio and overlooking the beautiful amphitheater. You have two ways to get there: park in the garage underneath the center and take the elevator up, then turn left to the back, or follow the sidewalk along the side the facility (past the Peace Pole) and then go along the back patio on until you see the large glassed-in room with the three double doors looking out to the patio. The room is bright, most everyone will be seated three to a table and the setting is informal (bring your snacks and coffee/tea). The room can comfortably sit 30 people. If we overflow we will shift to an 8:30 and 10:30 schedule. Registration is not essential, but it will be very helpful in planning. The Fillmores gave the course on a love offering basis and so will I, but I ask you to be generous.
