Background
UCL’s Information Services Division held its inaugural hackathon on the 6th of March 2024. An internal only affair, seven teams took part and came up with some brilliant ideas. Keen for more, this time we’re throwing our doors open to other universities to participate….
Theme
“A day in the life…”
We’ve tried to leave a lot of room for creativity but when the panel are judging, how well your submission would respond to a student’s daily life and challenges will be a big part of the criteria. A chatbot to ask about next lessons, a meal planning app, a notification system telling the student where their nearest happy hour is – clever solutions to everyday problems will get the most kudos.
Audience
Event is aimed at those with IT experience. Primarily developers but the anyone who can contribute to the creation of an engaging student experience is welcome. Designers, testers, architects, business analysts, even project managers are very welcome to take part.
What to expect on the day
The day will start with an overview and some guidance, as well as a brainstorming session for those still not sure what they will be building. There will then be a support team available throughout the entire day to assist in a variety of ways: technical leads for code and deployment, UX designers, architects, BAs? Teams of four or five will have an entire day to come up with a product before showcasing to a panel of judges in the late afternoon. Followed by awards and drinks. Lunch will be provided.
Experience
Any technology is permitted to make your vision a reality, but UCL can provide specific support and tooling for the following:
Deployment environment: AWS
Languages: Python, React, Typescript, maybe Go?
We will set up a session for you to come and talk to us about any of those technologies, and get a preview of our deployment toolkit (EASIKit) ahead of the Hackathon itself.
