UNIVERSITY STAFF FOLK SESSIONS 🎶
Acoustic Instrumental Gatherings – Just for Fun!
Did you learn an instrument years ago and wish you still played?
Or maybe you already do, but would love a chance to play informally with others after work?
I’m a university staff member who trained in classical music years ago, and I’ve recently found myself asking why I stopped playing, and missing the joy of playing for fun.
So I thought I’d start some regular, friendly folk and balfolk instrumental sessions (e.g. balfolk, english and irish reels and gigs, scottish ceilidh, scandi and french tunes) with other staff musicians who’d like to share tunes, learn from each other, and enjoy some relaxed music-making in good company.
If you’re a university staff member who’d like to dust off your instrument and play for fun, get in touch!
🎵 All acoustic instruments welcome, in particular:
Fiddle, cello, flute, whistle, guitar, accordion, melodeon, concertina, mandolin, nyckelharpa, bodhrán, pipes, hurdy-gurdy - or any other folk instrument!
🕰️ When: informal first session soon (day/time TBA)
📍 Where: a cosy local pub near campus / space at UoM (?)
🍻 What: relaxed instrumental sessions (no dancing needed - but welcome too), no performance pressure - the idea is to learn tunes from each other and practice them.
🎶 Inspiration: the spirit of local folk gatherings like the Skint Dance Folk Festival - but instrumental, low-key, and welcoming to a range of levels (as long as you can play in tune!).
