Alright, this one has been a long time coming! For several rounds of the book club we’ve been searching for an optimistic climate-fiction novel, but those are far and few between. Dystopian stories are easy to find, but reality is dystopian enough right now—at least in the book club we can choose a more positive outlook!
Well, KSR’s “The Ministy for the Future” seems to check all the boxes and has received raving reviews, so it’s about time we get on it! It’s almost 600 pages long, so we will give ourselves a bit more time until mid July!
Synopsis:
> Established in 2025, the purpose of the new organization was simple: To advocate for the world's future generations and to protect all living creatures, present and future. It soon became known as the Ministry for the Future, and this is its story.
> From legendary science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson comes a vision of climate change unlike any ever imagined. Told entirely through fictional eye-witness accounts, The Ministry For The Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, the story of how climate change will affect us all over the decades to come.
> Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face. It is a novel both immediate and impactful, desperate and hopeful in equal measure, and it is one of the most powerful and original books on climate change ever written.

We usually discuss in English and/or German, depending on which languages are present, but most likely the discussion will be in English. You definitely don’t need a literature degree to participate! It’s important to us to listen to each other, to treat everyone with respect and to create a safe setting.
The discussion takes place virtually in Zoom and the meeting link will be added to this event and on the day it happens. Just check back here half an hour before the meetup starts!
We usually discuss for 1.5-2 hours. It doesn’t matter if you have actually finished the book – everyone is welcome, as long as they have read at least a few pages and bring their impression.
