Classic Swedish Cult Film (with English subtitles) & Post-Movie Fika Meetup
Movie: The Girls (Flickorna, 1968)
Director: Mai Zetterling
Date: Saturday, March 8 (International Women’s Day)
Cinema: Fyrisbiografen, Uppsala
Language: Swedish | English subtitles
Screening: 15:30 (Intro in English starts at 15:15, ~15 min) | Post-meetup: after the film at Café Årummet
Duration:
Join us for Swedish film pioneer Mai Zetterling’s feminist cult classic The Girls (1968), starring Bibi Andersson, Harriet Andersson, and Gunnel Lindblom. Bold, playful, warm—and once fiercely criticized at its 1968 premiere—this film has since become a true cult favourite.
Special intro (in English):
Before the screening, Sonya Helgesson Ralevic (film writer & critic, and PhD candidate in Film Studies at Stockholm University) will give a short introduction about Mai Zetterling and her filmmaking. The intro begins at 15:15 and lasts approximately 15 minutes.
About the film:
A theatre company is rehearsing Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, where the women of Athens rebel to stop men from waging war. As three leading actresses live through difficult and humiliating relationships offstage, their roles—and their inner lives—begin to blur with reality on tour.
How It Works:

  • RSVP here on the Meetup app (or email **cultofswe@gmail.com**)
  • Buy your own cinema ticket in advance (if there is numbered seating I will post it in the chat).
  • Meet us after the film at Café Hörnan for fika and discussion.
  • A photo of the host will be posted on the event page about 15 minutes before the post-meetup so you can spot us easily.
  • Grab a coffee/tea and join us at our table — we’ll chat about the film, Swedish cinema, and International Women’s Day themes.

Not seeing the movie? No problem!
You’re welcome to join just the post-movie fika—just RSVP so we can plan table space. If you’re only attending the screening, let us know in the comments.
